S11, globalisation and the Australian media

television summaries

Seven News, 11/9/2000

This was probably the worst overall report looked at in this study. The was little actual reporting given by Geoff Parry, he gave small soundbites and let the visuals chosen tell the rest. No explanation was given of the S11's reason for protest, no mention of globalisation. No mention of police over-reaction other the quote from David Glanz (which was the only positive aspect). No mention of what went on inside the Forum. The level of bias was near ridiculous.

Newsreader intro: violence and chaos at the WEF in Melbourne, Richard Court's car trapped, casino shut down for the rest of the summit. Reporter: Geoff Parry.

- it was supposed to be non-violent.

- when ambulance tried to get through, protestors turned on its police escort.

- 10,000 protestors versus 2,000 police.

- the WEF has become a magnet for any group with a grievance.

- there were several arrests, protestors hand cuffed and cable tied and dragged away.

- Richard Court's car being stopped triggered some of the worst violence. Police tried to reason with them, then ran out if patience.

- David Glanz, S11 Aliiance spokeperson: 'we've shown enormous restraint and had something like 40 injuries at the hands of the police and that's something that needs to be looked at'.

- organisers are promising a repeat performance tomorrow, joined by unionists.
