Our organisation is responsible for promoting the conservation, repair and wise use of wetlands across Australia. It does this in collaboration with all levels of government, industry and community members. It is also responsible for advising on the implementation of the Convention on Wetlands, policy, legislation and programs.

The Australian wetlands web site provides information about Australia's obligations under the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, Iran, 1971). It also provides information and guidance about the importance of the Commonwealth's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) to the protection of wetlands.

Australian Wetlands of National Importance The Governments of Australia have made a commitment to recognise Australia's most important wetlands. The States and Territories, and the Commonwealth Government, have jointly compiled a Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia. The Directory identifies and recognises Australia's nationally important wetlands, and it provides information about the different wetland types and the flora and fauna that are dependent on these wetland ecosystems. In 2001 the third edition of the Directory was released. This identified 851 nationally important wetland sites around Australia.
